India is Missing

This blog is dedicated to finding my black cat, India.  Check here or on my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Searching-for-India-the-Black-Cat-257465531445956 for the latest information about India.

India is a black cat. She is missing from the 1700 block of 34/35th Streets in Bellingham, Washington. She is 7 years old and weighs about 12 pounds. In strong light she is actually black with darker black tiger stripes. She has a very, very slight kink in her tail that cannot be seen and must be felt. She also has about 12 white hairs on her chest.

When we came home on the evening of 5 November, India darted out the door. We tried to catch her but she was too quick and she ran and hid under the motorcycles. It had snowed the previous day and there were still several inches of snow on the ground and it was freezing outside. With the cold weather we were sure she’d be ready to come inside when we went to bed. We called but she didn’t come. I called twice more in the night but she still didn’t come.

I’ve spent all week looking for her.

I spent Monday calling for her all around our house and the yard. I checked all the usual places that she could have accidentally been locked inside (garage, shop, shed).

Tuesday I called again for her.

Wednesday morning I saw a raccoon print in the snow on the deck. That afternoon I visited the Humane Society and put up ads on the Bellingham Craigslist under Pets and Lost and Found. I also posted her information on the Lost Pets of Whatcom County Facebook page.

Thursday morning I posted flyers on street corners and left flyers in the neighbors’ mailboxes. India has a littermate named Henna, and Henna decided to go with us as we distributed flyers. A couple of nice kids saw Henna and stopped to pet her. They said they saw a black cat on Monday on their way to school and pointed out the driveway. I made sure that house got a flyer.

On Friday I called veterinarians to see if anyone had brought in a black cat that they found. I also signed up for Lostmydoggie.com and robocalled the neighborhood. I also visited the Humane Society again. So far no one has seen her.

I saw a black cat that day near the driveway the children identified. I approached her and petted her, but it wasn’t India. She was too light and lacked the kink in her tail. She also had too much white hair too low on her chest to be India.

I was contacted by some very kind neighbors who have occasionally taken in a black cat who has been wandering the neighborhood since the summer, and they captured her and invited me over to identify her. Unfortunately it was the same one I had seen earlier that day. When I was petting her I saw an even larger white spot on her belly in the area where she would have been shaved when she was spayed.

On Saturday I renewed the post with Lost Pets of Whatcom County. I also signed up with Nextdoor and posted about India there.

It’s been a week since we’ve seen India. Please share this page for the latest updates so we can bring her home. I am aware that cats in this area often fall prey to raccoons and coyotes, but I also know that they can go missing for a month and then come back. I’m hoping this is a case of the latter and not the former.
